Additional Details

Alexander Slidell Mackenzie (1803-1848) was a well-known naval commander, as well as a literary author. His first book, " A Year in Spain, by a Young American," was published in 1829. This letter describes further unpublished adventures in Europe: "I have got into France again, leaving behind me reluctantly the frontier of Spain, a country where for he last six months I have constantly found much to amuse & interest me" (top of page 5). The letter is captioned on the final blank "Journey to Barcelona and thence to France."
